Three Ways I Support Independent Musicians

There are more than three, but let’s start here:

  1. I’m a member of Black Fret, the modern music patronage society started right here in Austin, Texas, and coming soon to other major cities. Black Fret awards grants to musicians to help them meet key steps in their careers like touring and recording. It’s a brilliant, authentic model and I’m proud to be a part of it.
  2. I’m a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, aka the Grammys. In addition to giving out those famous awards, NARAS is strong in advocacy for artists’ rights and in education for all musicians, from aspiring kids to industry veterans. Our Texas chapter is packed with smart people who give generously of their time and wisdom, and we get to host a stellar party during South By Southwest.
  3. I refer artists to the Austin Music Foundation for free consultation and regularly scheduled free workshops. AMF is a major part of the network of excellent free or low-cost resources that Austin musicians have access to, which doesn’t make up for the lack of affordable housing, but it’s still something.
